Deconstructing Old Ads: Remembering Jason Lucas

I've written before about my favorite bass fishing writer, Jason Lucas. Below is a picture of him taken on Lake Mead in 1948 as part of an article which appeared that year in Sports Afield. This particular photo was not used in the article but ten years later showed up as the cover of Sports Afield in February of 1958. It was also printed as a post card that I'm guessing was for sale in the Lake Mead area. Also, one postcard was included with each copy of a 33 1/3 LP that Sports Afield put out around 1960. One side featured bass fishing tips and the other side trout fishing tips from Jason Lucas. To my great disappointment (as a Jason Lucas groupie) it was narrated by Ted Kesting, the Editor of Sports Afield not Jason Lucas.

I have quite a few years of Sports Afield magazines from the 50s and early 60s. lucas was and still is my favorite. Some people have said things about what he wrote that are inaccurate. Things they "remember" he said, and which they then go on to malign. Very sad way to comment on a man of great integrity and knowledge about the sport of fishing.
