It was really in the first two decades of the twentieth century that the fishing photograph became a central part of fishing advertising. One of the most prominent advertisers was Bristol Horton, a firm that specialized in full page ads in magazines for forty years. Here's a great example of a Bristol "photographic" ad from the January 1921 Field & Stream melding a wonderful photo of a fly angler in mid-stream and some understated advertising copy.
