Is This the Rarest Fishing Tackle Display Item Ever or just the Coolest?

Is this the rarest dealer display in history? From the March 30, 1930 Sporting Goods Dealer comes this moving display for Shakespeare Marhoff reels. I would ask if anyone has seen this before, but I imagine that no one has. I hope I’m wrong, as it’s the absolute coolest thing ever!

Shakespeare Provided Unique Tackle Display

The Shakespeare Company reports that it is offering to dealers a window display that is decidedly different in the new Shakespeare “Marhoff” reel display.

“Anglers who see it stop, look, and rub their eyes, for here is a mechanical display that reproduces most realistically all the thrill of plating a real fish in the open,” says the company. “Actually, the fish struggles and the miniature effectively renew the old itch to go fishin’.” One naturally split bamboo rod bends, as the excited angler plays the fish at the end of a piece of real ‘Super-Silk” Line. All the excitement, all the thrill of hooking onto a big one are there. It would be difficult to imagine a window true that would more effectively … It is a sales quickener, not only for fishing tackle but for other departments.”

The Marhoff reel display, states the company, may be obtained free of charge with an order for six Marhoff reels. Separately, it may be ordered for $2, which will later be refunded when the dealer’s orders for Marhoff reels increase to six. As the company expects that the display will sell at least six reels for each dealer, it recommends obtaining the display free of charge at the outset. The motive power for the display is furnished by any electric fan that a dealer happens to have on hand.

Dealer Display Cards, Part 16

Dealer Display Cards, Part 16

Almost every 1940s-1970s tackle box had at least one Little Cleo spoon in it. A Seneca Tackle product, this had to be one of the most popular lures sold during its heyday. And who would wonder at $.65 each?

Dealer Display Cards, Part 14

Dealer Display Cards, Part 14: Allcock!

Joe Stagnitti sent this in this week and I have to say when it comes to Dealer Display items, this one pretty much takes the cake!

Hi Todd,
Thought this would only be fitting for your latest blog post regarding Allcock as well as your continuing series on advertising pieces. This is an original 1890's wooden hinged display cases, complete with it's original baits, all sewn to the original cards.

Have had this for many years and it's one of my favorites. Includes lots of rare baits, Cleopatra, Jointed Cleopatra, Clipper, Paragon variation, 2 Livesey patent baits, all of the original rubber fly baits, etc....
Enjoy!!

Here is one my favorite later dealer display cards--the Snagless Sally from Hildebrandt. Gotta love the slogan: "the Southern Vampire is your Golden Promise for takin' em all." This is from a 1959 dealer catalog.

Courtesy of John Caldwell, today we have a real "wow" Point of Purchase Display Card. It's the Wiggle Whiz, manufactured in Valley Station, Kentucky--a Texas/Pico style lure but oh so very rare, especially on a dealer card. An amazing card.

Dealer Display Cards, Part 9

Dealer Display Cards, Part 9

This week Scott Jahss sends in one of his favorite pieces. He writes:

Attached is one of my display cards I really like. It was the first card I bought and one of the first items I bought that broke the $20 barrier when I started to collect. I really like the graphics and colors on the card.

I think you got a steal on this one! Pretty graphics, full card, rare, nifty name, the Sparky is an all-around fabulous piece. Thanks for sharing!

Dealer Display Cards, Part 7

Dealer Display Cards, Part 7

This week in our overview of Point-of-Purchase cards, we get a nifty piece submitted by John Etchieson. He writes:

I know that you like the trade houses and their private label items, and as I know you are aware, the Hiawatha was just such a brand of the Gamble's Stores. The Hiawatha BLACK SWAN brand was a line made for them (if my research is correct) by the B F Gladding Line Company, which was essentially their INVINCIBLE brand of Nylon line.

The display card is somewhat unique in that it actually hold a box of the line spools which can be inserted in the cutout space provided on the counter top display card. You will note the code "1-54" that is printed in small size in the lower right corner, which I have surmised means "January 1954"

Cool! Thanks for sharing, John!

Dealer Display Cards, Part 6

Dealer Display Cards, Part 6

Here's a cool one from Mike Ellsworth. Mike writes "I have two of these, both were found in America although I know for a fact that they were also used here in the UK and in Sweden. The spinners are introduced as 'new' therefore I can date the item exactly, i.e. early 1962. It is interesting the way that Abu used women, as anglers, to promote their products."

Thanks Mike! Neat piece.

Dealer Display Cards, Part 5

Dealer Display Cards, Part 5

Here's a super cool Dealer Display Card from the ever popular Creek Chub Bait Company--the Snark Eel. I believe this was named after a missile from the 1950s, which would make them a Cold War product. Thanks to Don Grimm for this one!

Dealer Display Cards, Part 2

Dealer Display Cards, Part 2

Got a great response to the Point of Purchase (POP) and Dealer Display card feature I started last week, and should have enough submissions for the next couple of months. Keep sending 'em in! They are awesome pieces from a time gone by.

This one is from our Texas friend Colby Sorrells, who sends one of his favorite pieces: a Langley Reel POP Display from the 1950s. Awesome piece and just flat out beautiful!

Dealer Display Cards, Part I

A semi-regular feature I'd like to start is to begin profiling Point of Purchase display cards for various brands of fishing tackle. Many of these will come from advertisements or from tackle catalogs, as I'm sure many of them didn't survive.

I'd like to start it out by profiling a 1930 Dealer Display card from Horrocks-Ibbotson, featuring their Daredevle clone known as the Basspoon.

If anyone has an actual copy of one of these, drop me a note! And if you have a Dealer Display card you'd like profiled, drop me an email to whitefishpress AT yahoo DOT com!
