The Fishing Themed Advertisement: Paul Jones Whiskey (1954)

This episode of the Fishing Themed Advertisement is posted in honor of Jim Schottenham, doyen of all-things sidemount. It's a 1954 Paul Jones blended whiskey ad featuring a sidemount birdcage reel. It's the only ad I recall seeing that has such a reel in it, and it certainly looks like a Billinghurst Follett. Whomever did the ad certainly had access to some awesome tackle, as I'm sure Jim would agree!

1000 Words

This week in Hollywood Goes Fishing we feature Robert Mitchum -- rakish Hollywood icon -- from the 1957 film Fire Down Below, which co-starred Rita Hayworth and Jack Lemmon. It's a story about two men who smuggle goods and who sometimes fish, as pictured below. It's a good movie.

The Fishing Themed Advertisement: Johnson Motors (1955)

This is a nice outdoor painting from an outboard engine icon -- Johnson motors. They were prolific advertisers and I would guess half their ads featured fishing of some kind (many, it must be admitted, featured that enemy of fishermen everywhere--the water skier).

The Fishing Photographer with Doug Bucha (January 2014)

Visiting the South Bend area!!

I just wanted to let collectors know what the South Bend area has to offer in the way of museums as they relate to fishing.

The photograph shows a display of fishing related items that can be found at the Studebaker National Museum in South Bend. The museum features many fine Studebaker automobiles and is one of the finest auto museums in the country. It is fantastic!!

In addition, The Center for History is located just next door. It houses all the records from the South Bend Bait and Tackle Company going back to its beginnings. These are available for private viewing for research purposes.

There are three museums just across the state line in Michigan which will be of great interest to the collector. The city of Niles offers the Fort St. Joseph Museum that has a small collection of local fishing items, including the Harris Frog.

The city of Dowagiac not only has the Heddon Museum but it also has a museum downtown. This little known museum features one of the finest displays of Heddon items that can be found anywhere.

Please do not forget to visit the University of Notre Dame. It has over one million visitors every year and is the largest tourist attraction in all of Indiana. You will not be disappointed.

Have a great 2014.

1000 Words

This week in 1000 Words: Hollywood Goes Fishing we get a really great press photo of Olivia de Haviland. This photo was shot just before she got the lead in Captain Blood in 1935, a film that was nominated for an Academy Award. It helped launch de Haviland's incredible career which is still going on -- she narrated a stunning film about art therapy in alzheimer's treatment called I Remember Better When I Paint in 2009 and presented it at Cannes in 2011. Olivia de Haviland is going strong today at the age of 97, a woman of rare talent and grace.
